NSW Premier Nathan Rees, with the Minister for Transport
David Campbell, today announced the introduction of new
child restraint laws for children up to seven years of age.
From 1 March, 2010, all children up to the age of seven
years must be correctly restrained in an approved child
restraint, suitable for their size and age.
All children under four years must be transported in the
rear seat of a motor vehicle with two or more rows.

in the front passenger seat of a vehicle if all available
seating positions in the rear seat have been occupied by

For more information on choosing the correct restraint
for your child go to the Child

Crashes
on Sydney roads
20-11-2007
The RTA welcomes NRMA Insurance’s focus on the need
for drivers to improve their knowledge of the road rules
and safe driving – and the need to pay attention to
the road around them.
The top sites, based on NRMA Insurance claim data, are
some of the busiest locations in Sydney.
Many are interchanges between motorways and major arterial
roads that experience some of the heaviest traffic volumes
in the state.
These are busy intersections with multiple lanes, multiple
directions and multiple turning movements.
The M4 features because it is the longest motorway in Sydney
and has many major interchanges with other main roads that
are heavily trafficked.
This provides a valuable insight into driver behaviour
but generally in relation to minor crashes. There were no
fatal crashes and 29 injury crashes at the top five locations.
The RTA is constantly analysing all parts of the Sydney
road network to identify locations with higher rates of
casualty crashes.
The RTA focuses most of its road safety engineering resources
on protecting people by upgrading locations where casualties
and fatalities occur.
This year $933 million has been allocated to maintenance
of the State’s roads and more than $140 million to
road safety programs and campaigns.
Hundreds of millions more are spent every year on road
upgrades which also improve road safety.
Most of the crashes recorded by NRMA Insurance were low
severity crashes in heavy traffic conditions. Many would
not have involved anyone being injured or Police being called.
Experts from the NSW Centre for Road Safety will analyse
the data from the major locations identified by the NRMA
to see if it can offer any clues about reducing the incidence
of crashes at the locations.

Community
Safety Update
Its school holiday time again, this means there are more
children out and about in the community enjoying the great
outdoors! Please SLOW DOWN whilst driving through Ropes
Crossing and keep a look out for children.
If you are planning on going away during the holiday break,
please make sure you take the necessary precautions to secure
your home and belongings.
Tell a neighbour you are going away. Ask them to collect
your mail and take in your garbage bin.
Give a neighbour your contact details for whilst you're
away in case they need to contact you.
Lock all doors, windows, garden sheds, gates, garages and
any other areas of your home that are able to be secure.
Turn on your house alarm.
WARNING SNAKE SEASON
Ropes Crossing residents please be on the lookout during
snake season - from September to February.
As the weather warms up, snakes may move to residential
areas - usually in search of water, food, or somewhere to
hide.
Ropes Crossing is surrounded by bushland and have a number
of grassy areas located within the many local parks, which
are great places to relax, but in the warm weather we must
remember that they are also the natural habitat for snakes.
Please take care when walking along creeks and bike tracks,
and make sure you keep your dog on lead in parks where snakes
may be present.
Snakes are not naturally aggressive and always prefer to
retreat. They will only attack humans if hurt of provoked
- most bites occur when people try to kill or capture snakes.
If you come across a snake in the bush, just calmly walk
the other way. If you find a snake in your home or garden,
and would like it removed, the NPWS may be able to give
you contact details for a local herpetologist (or reptile
and ampgibian expert) NPWS 02 9995 5000.
